SOC336, SOC445

Special & Advanced Topics in Sociology

These courses explore the trade, acquisition, and collection of cultural heritage, with a special focus on looted items. We trace the colonial trajectories of museums and looting, unpack the dynamics of power at museums and other cultural institutions, and de-colonially rethink culture, loot, and loss.

Crime & Gender

Both crime and gender are shaped by cultural, social, political, and historical contexts. In this course, we will explore the intersections of crime and gender with an eye towards these complex sociological contexts. Taking an intersectional, critical, and cultural criminological approach, we will cover classical aspects of gender and crime such as gender gaps, violence, and the law, as well as contemporary and unconventional topics, such as colonial governance of gendered crimes, women in organized crime groups, and gender, crime, and sexuality in film and television.
